Fluid Ontologies (2024)
for Transsonic, on self-built laser feedback instrument
In "Fluid Ontologies", Transsonic uses two self-built laser-feedback-instruments FO2. The instrument uses laser modules as sound sources and solar panels as microphones, creating audiovisual feedback loops that spawn visual and sound from the same optoelectrical mechanism. FO2 comprises two 3D-printed handheld controllers (with joysticks and buttons), a backpack with an embedded DSP system running on a Bela Gem and programmed in SuperCollider, and laser drivers. The drivers, controlled via Bela, modulate sound signals onto the lasers, feeding back via solar panels used as microphones. This enables new ways of exploring the mediality of feedback through light connection. Using a machine-learning musical agent system that live-learns and plays with the material performed with FO2 and multichannel spatialization, we extend the spatial dimensions (sonically/visually) creating a unique audiovisual experience.
